Twenty per cent of people who quit smoking in light of Japan's October 1 tax-induced cigarette price hikes have already returned to their habit, according to a story by Japan Tobacco quoting the results of an online survey conducted by Macromill Inc.
But the poll, conducted on November 1 and 2 among 500 adults, found also that 62 per cent of those who stopped smoking due to the price increases had not smoked a single cigarette in the meantime.
Eighteen per cent said they had largely maintained their abstinence though they had "puffed a few times".
The October 1 price rise was about five times the average ¥20 increase per pack of the recent past.
