- Tax Can Help Cut Down Smoking

Smokers are nicotine addicts. They know the risks of inhaling toxic substances with each puff, yet are addicted to nicotine to the point of being willing to suspend logical thought and care for their health by way of their craving for nicotine.
For the rest of us who must endure their foul habit, we are forced to turn to the weapons of public education, tough legislation and higher taxation to deter smokers from feeding their nicotine habit.
The World Health Organisation notes that across the Gulf Cooperation Council states, cigarettes and tobacco products are cheap - far cheaper than in western countries, and there still remains an attitude that smoking is socially acceptable.
In the UAE, a series of laws and municipal regulations have been instituted to prohibit the consumption of tobacco products in most public places.
The next step should be a hefty tax to price them beyond the reach of nicotine addicts.
