China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) issued the "27th Report on China's Internet Development" on Thursday. By the end of 2010, China's online population numbered 457 million, an increase of 73.3 million year on year, and the Internet penetration rate rose to 34.3 percent, an increase of 5.4 percentage points.

The number of China's mobile phone Internet users reached 303 million people at the end of December 2010. Mobile phone Internet users still account for the bulk of the growth in China's Internet users, growing by 69.3 million compared to the same period of 2009.

Remarkably, the number of online shoppers grew 48.6 percent in 2010, making it the fastest growing group of users. This indicates that more economic activities in China are becoming part of the Internet era.

The report indicated that online payment services and Web banking services grew 45.8 percent and 48.2 percent, respectively. The two categories by far exceeded other types of network functions.

According to the report, China has strengthened its capability to detect and handle Internet and information security risks as the safety mechanisms continue to improve.

Moreover, a helping hand from a credible third party is needed to prevent cyber threats and crackdown on online fraud. The report also calls for third-party intervention in online authentication and encrypted data with the goal of building a sophisticated prevention system for Chinese Web users.
