The Chinese government plans to further intensify efforts over the next five years to salvage and protect the country's most important archives, said the State Archives Administration on Tuesday.

According to the director of the administration Yang Dongquan, in the past five years, the country's treasury allocated 450 million yuan (68 million U.S. dollars) to restore and protect more than 4.5 million archives.

The central government has also spent 600 million yuan this year subsidizing the construction of 203 county-level archives in central and west China.

More than 1200 archives will be subsidized in the next five years.

As required by China's treasury, the restoration and protection work on the archives must be finished during China's 12th Five Year Plan (2011-2015).
