Tucson, AZ (KOLD) - A state senator wants to make sure young people aren't getting their hands on e-cigarettes.
Many companies claim they don't sell electronic cigarettes to minors, but parents should know children here in Arizona can legally purchase them.
"I remember hearing about it awhile ago, I didn't think much of it.Sounded kind of strange and I wasn't sure if it was serious," Etienne Boeff said.
These 16-year-old Northwest side high school students heading to the movies at the Foothills Mall on Friday haven't heard much about electronic cigarettes.
Forest Berger said, "All I know is it's like a cigarette, but apparently without the harmful fumes."
An e-cigarette is a battery-powered device that heats up a liquid nicotine solution that users inhale as a mist. Unlike real cigarettes, they're virtually undetectable but still have the nicotine.
"As far as kids are concerned, I prefer they just don't touch these at all," David Dettloff said.
David Dettloff is the CEO of Freedom Smoke USA, a brand new electronic cigarette lounge on the Northwest side. He says he would never want a child under 18 trying his products.
"Once you're 18 and you're an adult and you can make an informed decision if you want an alternative to smoking cigarettes, I'm here for you. That's our thing."
State senator Steve Yarbrough of Chandler wants to make sure they're not reaching kids looking for a buzz.
He says hopefully a few less young people will suffer nicotine addictions with this ban.
"Like cigarettes, it still doesn't sound like it's necessarily good for you," Boeff said.
