About 14 million women in Bangladesh consume tobacco, but only about 0.7-0.75 million of them smoke, according to a New Age story published on January 1 after a three-day "training" course for journalists on "Media for Tobacco Control in Bangladesh" at the Press Institute of Bangladesh (PIB).
More than 13 million women consume smokeless tobaccos, which include "gul", "jarda" and "sada pata".
More women than men use smokeless tobacco.
The journalists were told that, overall, about 41.3 million people in Bangladesh consume tobacco and that tobacco consumption had increased by 7.5 per cent since 2004.
The course was jointly organised by the PIB and Progga (Knowledge for Progress), a research organisation.
